My Imaginary…Friend

Nope, nothing to see here…

As a child, I did occasionally play with an imaginary friend. I think they appeared one day running along beside our car when I was out and about somewhere with my family.

I remember us cruising down the road when all of a sudden, there it was, running along beside us, sometimes on rooftops, fences, or along power lines, doing death defying flips and twists, flying through the air (but still reasonably having to touch the ground occasionally) somehow managing all the while to keep pace with the vehicle. Sometimes it just ran alongside us on the road or sidewalk.

Not only could it move with alarming super fun speed, but it also could speak to me telepathically, so I could have conversations with it in my head. I think it was happy to finally have someone to hang out with (apparently the odds of an invisibility proof telepathic child being out there was a little bit lowish, so I think some of the pursuing was just sheer excitement of having someone to talk to).

I’m not sure why I didn’t invite it in for a seat…However, I think it also might have been a ghost.

No, not that kind of ghost. The friendly, can find you anywhere and follows you around type.

No, seriously, all the horror loving side of me, um… aside, it wasn’t sinister like that. In fact, it was fluffy. You see, it was actually a cat.

I’m not sure exactly where I came up with it, since I already had one at home (granted not a telepathic-parkour-loving-invisible-ghost-cat, ours was a senior who mostly slept in various places around the house) but I suspect it might have something to do with a blend of characters I saw on TV and movies. Perhaps it was part Cheshire? I remember it being vaguely quiet and wise, for all it’s vigor, and it introduced itself as Cosmic Cat.

Hello, I’m Cosmic Cat. Mind if I run around chasing your car for a while? I could use a run…

So, yeah, that was my imaginary friend. Mostly it kept me company and entertained on car rides, although I think it popped up around the house, or outside my window, from time to time also…my memory about our adventures was a little, heh, fuzzy.

So, how about you? Any friends in your head? If so, I’d love to hear about them. 🙂

  1. Hooray! Someone else had imaginary pets! My parents tell me that when I was very small, I had a pack of imaginary dogs that followed me around. I don’t think they were as acrobatic as Cosmic Cat, but they did demand to be carefully loaded into the car before we went anywhere!
