Night Cycles

Awaken to a

thump

In the darkness

No glow of alarm clock

by the bed

Straining to listen

through the tension

wondering if it all

is in your head

at the window

the world is in shadow

lights are out

everywhere

your phone screen

illuminates

your feet

as you creep around

in your underwear

movement

catches your eye

but it’s just

your own reflection

and after

some more searching

your house

passes inspection

you snuggle back into bed

feeling like a chump

and as consciousness

tapers to dreamland

you awaken to a

thump
