Me, blogging and Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls

I love the song Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. Some songs have to grow on me, but not this one. Hearing this one was love at first listen. It was a mirror in which I saw myself looking back. Listening to it today seems like a perfect allegory for the angst I sometimes feel about blogging, particularly when I think about blogging about myself. So, this is something new, the italics are the actual lyrics, and the words are my take on how they relate to how I feel about blogging. Here goes nothing:

And I’d give up forever to touch you

I wish that I could write something meaningful

‘Cause I know that you feel me somehow

‘Cause I know that people keep clicking here

You’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be

I’ve always wanted to be a writer

And I don’t wanna go home right now

Because it’s something bigger than just being me

And all I can taste is this moment

I could say something right now

And all I can breathe is your life

That might make you react

When sooner or later it’s over

And then you stop reading

I just don’t wanna miss you tonight

And don’t come back

And I don’t want the world to see me

I’m scared to post my picture

‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand

‘Cause I don’t want you to judge me on that

When everything’s made to be broken

I’ve been judged that way already

I just want you to know who I am

And I’m so much more than that

And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming

But I get writers block

Or the moment of truth in your lies

or am just afraid of posting my thoughts

When everything feels like the movies

So I post about Documentaries and other escapes

Yeah, you bleed just to know you’re alive

And hate that my blog sucks

And I don’t want the world to see me

And I don’t always have the courage to write true

‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand

Because sometimes truth changes with time

When everything’s made to be broken

And although they might jeer at my writing

I just want you to know who I am

I still want someone to’ve seen mine

And I don’t want the world to see me

So I hide behind banality

‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand

When I could write so much more

When everything’s made to be broken

Because sometimes I’m broken

I just want you to know who I am

And that’s what writing is for

And I don’t want the world to see me

Yet I’m too afraid to be honest

‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand

Too afraid to be me

When everything’s made to be broken

Too afraid to risk it all

I just want you to know who I am

By letting you see underneath

I just want you to know who I am

Why can’t I be me?

I just want you to know who I am

I wish that I could write freely

I just want you to know who I am

Maybe you’d like me
