I came across this article today in the news, and it was nice to see someone doing something to help someone who needed a hand. It also kind of underscores that although we all begin as strangers to each other, sometimes just a simple conversation is all that needs to be done to put us on the path to friendship. Sometimes that path might meander off into the distance, a nice walk but ultimately just a gentle detour from where we’re headed, but some of those paths are life changing and your journey will never be the same.
In the news story above you learn about a man who has a chance encounter with a woman due to a flat tire. The man is homeless, and as usual for those without homes, saddled with a lot of previously bad luck. The woman invites him to dinner and from there sets out to help him gain a little bit of his life and dignity back. She’s trying to get him set up with his own micro home so that he can try to move towards a better future and own his own place again.
It’s so great to see what just a little initial kindness can bring, and maybe this story might inspire others to do some small thing today to reach out and be kind. Kindness doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to fix everything that is wrong with the world. It just has to be there with a willingness to take a little action. To make the world a little better. Sometimes a little action goes a long way, and it seems to me that kindness seems to attract more kindness, like one persons decision to be nice will justify and inspire others to step up just a little more. That’s quite the snowball that can build up with just one small step.
On the flip side of the coin, maybe this article might inspire someone to ask for that little bit of help that they need. I think there may be vast pools of untapped kindness just waiting to pour out, if only we knew what we could do to help. It can be overwhelming in these times we live in to know where to put that kind energy. Sometimes we become frozen due to worries of being taken advantage of, or just not feeling like we can do enough.
Maybe the way to break that feeling is just to do something. It doesn’t have to be much. Maybe it’s just sharing a story with a little kindness sprinkled in. Maybe it’s a just a smile, followed by “Hello” to someone you don’t know. Maybe it’s just checking in on someone you do know, and letting them know you’re there. What seems small to you could mean the world to someone else. You just never know until you try.
